MTA Bus Redesign Affects Us

The MTA has proposed a redesign of the B9 and B64 bus routes. Their changes will affect older adults throughout Southwest Brooklyn. The changes in the B9 are the reduction of stops, which create a greater distance between stops making it difficult for older adults to navigate.

Currently, the B64 travels from Coney Island to Shore Road along Bay Ridge Avenue. The MTA proposes to shift the route so that B64 will turn right onto Fourth Avenue. That will leave the balance of Bay Ridge Avenue to Shore Road serviced by B9, which already is a crowded bus. There isn’t a shelter for older adults to wait for the transfer and the distance from Fourth Avenue to Shore Road is over half a mile.

Therefore, we are asking the community to tell the MTA not to make these changes. Afterall, there should be more accessible transportation not less.

Please help us by completing our letter to Janno Lieber, Chair and CEO of the MTA. (click here to download the letter). When signed, please either mail it to him or give it to us at the Center and we’ll mail it with the others. Or, if you’d like to write your own letter using ours as a template, that’s helpful as well.

The MTA is conducting their Spring Customer Survey. Please complete it strongly encouraging not to make the proposed changes to B9 & B64. (click here for the survey)

The dark green line is the proposed B64 route change. The grey lines are the areas no longer served by the B64.
